Das Projekt geht ursprünglich aus dem "Netscape Navigator" hervor und etabliert daraufhin die "Mozilla Application Suite" (später umbenannt in "SeaMonkey"). 1998 wird die "Mozilla Organization" ("Mozilla.org") gegründet, die sich mit der Herstellung und Wartung der Produkte beschäftigt.
Bis heute basiert das Firmenlogo (eine Dinosaurier-ähnliche Echse namens "Mozilla") auf der "Netscape Communications Corporation".
2002 veröffentlicht Mozilla den überaus populären Browser "Firefox", der dem meist verwendeten Internet-Browser von Microsoft "Internet Explorer" Konkurrenz macht.
