Während PHP, Perl oder MySQL tendenziell serverseitig (z.B. bei der Verwaltung von Daten) verwendet werden, findet JavaScript eher clientseitig, also bei der Darstellung und Verarbeitung im Web-Browser, statt. Mit JavaScript ist es möglich, Nutzerinteraktionen über Banner oder Kontaktformulare zu provozieren. Auch das Programmieren kleinerer Spiele und Anwendung ist möglich.
