Eine so verstandene ästhetische Immersionstheorie versucht einen zentralen Aspekt der Medienrezeption zu erklären: die „mentale Verschmelzung“ des rezipierenden Subjektes mit dem rezipierten Objekt, etwa das Eintauchen in eine Erzählung, in ein Bild, eine Theateraufführung, einen Film usw. Damit dieses Eintauchen, das als ein wichtiger, wenn nicht der wichtigste Aspekt des Gelingens solcher künstlerischer Produktion gilt, überhaupt stattfinden kann, haben sich seit der Antike verschiedene ästhetische Strategien in den Künsten entwickelt.
